Planning a Procedure

MicroSort® laboratories perform the sorting procedure and generate an enriched sperm sample that can be used with a wide variety of assisted reproductive techniques. These techniques are performed by gynecologists and specialized physicians. The different assisted reproductive techniques available depends on the circumstances of each couple.

MicroSort® laboratories are designed to work in collaboration with clinics and physicians around the globe that perform these assisted reproductive techniques.

Each couple, together with their physician, will decide the ideal assisted reproductive technique to be used, monitor the ovulation cycle, and determine the optimal date for the MicroSort® procedure.

Each technique offers different options and requirements:

  • Intrauterine Insemination (IUI). is a non-invasive technique where the sorted sperm cells are deposited into the uterus after the sort.  The technique offers a range of options regarding the type of cycle and stimulation that could be provided along with the use of IUI to increase the chances of achieving a pregnancy according to your clinical case. Discussing these options with a physician should be done in advance before the cycle starts. Sorting a specimen for IUI requires 140 million total motile sperm cells. The IUI is performed on site after the sort (which implies the presence of both parties on ovulation day), but the monitoring before and after the sort could be performed by your local physician. This technique does not allow cryopreservation after the sort, nor shipping since cryopreservation will significantly reduce the amount of live and motile cells — as well as the chances of pregnancy.
  • In vitro fertilization (IVF). This technique  retrieves the oocyte and performs the fertilization (using sorted sperm cells) within a lab for a later transfer of the resulting embryos. Due to its nature, it allows for a wide range of additional techniques to be added to the process, such as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), Premimplantation Genetic Diagnosis or Screening (PGD/PGS), among other procedures. This technique requires a lower amount of cells allowing us to use a minimum of 70 million motile sperm cells. There could be other options available and some patients don’t’ meet this requirement. This technique also allows us to cryopreserve samples before or after the same is sorted for future use. Cryopreserved samples can be shipped to other locations around the world. The ability to ship to a location is dependent upon local regulations.
  • MicroSort® plus PGD (Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis). This is a powerful and more efficient combination when used for Family Balancing. This technique follows the steps of IVF, but once the embryos are created a biopsy and a DNA screening is peformed of each embryo to provide information about the health and gender of each one with more than 99% accuracy. MicroSort® will increase the number of embryos  of the desired gender and PGS will allow you to confirm the gender and screen the health previous to transfer.

MicroSort® laboratories can provide all the information needed so you can, in collaboration with your physician, plan the optimal date to perform the MicroSort® procedure.
